  35. QUICK START
  36. -----------
  37.  
  38. 1) Create a directory on your hard disk & copy DAMENU.ZIP (or the contents
  39.    of the distribution disk) to that directory.  
  40.  
  41. 2) Run the install program DAINSTAL and follow the on-screen prompts.  
  42.    (hopefully these should be self explanatory for most users) DAINSTAL
  43.    creates a small file in the root directory called DAMENU.DAT, which
  44.    points to the directory where DAMENU resides.
  45.  
  46.    *** NOTE ***
  47.    If you have previously run DAINSTAL and then moved the files to a
  48.    different directory, DAMENU will not work properly.  To remedy this,
  49.    simply delete the file DAMENU.DAT from the root directory, and re-run
  50.    DAINSTAL. 
  51.  
  52. 3) If you decided to have DAINSTAL modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT, then reboot 
  53.    your computer once DAINSTAL has finished.  Otherwise update the path
  54.    statement manually, and add the command 'M' as the last line of the
  55.    file so that DAMENU comes up at boot time.  Reboot after saving the file.
  56.  
  57. 4) Type 'M' at the DOS prompt to bring up the menu. (If you didn't have
  58.    DAINSTAL modify your autoexec, you must be in the directory created in
  59.    step 1 above)
  60.  
  61. 5) Select a function key to associate an application with by simply pressing
  62.    that key.  At this point, all function keys should read "* This Space 
  63.    Available" and DAMENU knows that you want to setup a new application.
  64.  
  65. 6) Type in the appropriate Application Description, select protection (Yes or
  66.    No using the cursor keys), and file-to-pass options (helpful for word 
  67.    processors).  
  68.  
  69. 7) Next type in the name of the application as you would if you were at the 
  70.    DOS prompt.  DAMENU will then search all of the first level subdirectories
  71.    on you hard disk for the application.  If you have an application that
  72.    does not reside in a first level subdirectory, manual modifications can
  73.    be made the the menu files to include this in the menu system.  See
  74.    the file DAMANUAL.DOC for further information.
  75.  
  76. 8) Now hitting the same function key (once the application has been found 
  77.    successfully) and WaLa!!  You're in your app!  That's it!
  78.  
  79. Menu modifications can be made to an existing function key by hitting the 
  80. ALT key combined with that function key.  Protection on exiting to DOS 
  81. can be made by selecting ALT-F10.
  82.  
  83. The initial password is DAMENU, and can be changed by re-running the 
  84. installation program (don't worry, DAINSTAL knows that DAMENU has been 
  85. installed already, and will bring up different menu)  DAINSTAL can be invoked
  86. from within DAMENU by pressing ALT-I while in the menu system.
  87.  
  88. The banner text, protection for menu modifications, screen blank delay 
  89. as well as the application password can all be modified through DAINSTAL.  
  90.  
  91. If, by chance, the application directory has been changed, or DAMENU cannot
  92. find the files it needs, more often than not the DAMENU.DAT file is pointing
  93. to the wrong directory.  This file is located in your ROOT directory and can
  94. be updated in one of two ways.
  95.  
  96. First, if you have an ASCII text editor, simply edit the file to reflect the
  97. directory where the DAMENU application files can be found and save that file
  98. in the root directory.  Make sure that you include the final backslash (\) on
  99. the directory name!
  100.  
  101. Second, you can delete the file DAMENU.DAT, and re-run the DAINSTAL program
  102. from the new directory.  Any current menu entries will be lost by deleting
  103. DAMENU.DAT and running DAINSTAL.
  104.
